I finally had the chance to set up the table to get a shot of my Chaos army, led by Maulblade the Doomkin!
I had to put a lot of light on the table to get a good shot, but the end result washed out the Chaos Warrior banner. Oh, well, I am still pleased with the results! I discovered after much fiddling about with the alignment that I need to take the time to make movement trays!
Left to right: Caramon the Rabid and part of his Chaos Dwarf warband, the Blighted Host led by Maulblade himself, Moog of Marrow Moor (the Troll), Wobblegnash's Reavers, and the Beastman Regiment With No Name.
Of course, you can see better photos in the Chaos Gallery! For that matter, every model in this army had been featured in an individual photo if you scroll back through the blog.
I really have a lot on my plate these days, so it may be a while before I get around to adding more, but going forward I want to add more Beastmen and a unit of Minotaurs (man, are these guys are pricey on eBay). I also want to bulk up my Chaos allies with a Chaos Sorcerer, more Chaos Dwarf Berserkers and Crossbowmen, a unit of Chaos Goblins, and a unit of Chaos Centaurs. So far I only have the Sorcerer and the Chaos Goblins so they will probably be next as I am trying not to spend too much on eBay over the summer.
My Undead army doesn't rally look like an army yet, so I decided to hold off on the group shot for them. I have a lot of unpainted Undead around the house so they will probably see expansion before the Chaos horde. Anyway, back to Rogue Trader next time...

Chaos Regiments
So here are my main units so far...
Up next I will finish the beastman regiment, add a minotaur or troll (or both!), and start on my small allied contingent of Chaos Dwarves. I also have a regiment of Slaanesh Chaos Warriors and the warbands of Slaanesh, Khorne, and Tzeentch coming down the road. The Undead will continue to grow as well with more skeletons, death riders, and a 30-model regiment of zombies!

Knarl Frothmaul, Champion of Nurgle
Finally (for now - Knarl makes twelve for the unit), here is a really old Chaos Warrior model...
There is also a mounted version of this model that I'd like to get, but for now he will fill the ranks of my Chaos Warrior unit. I really like how the shield turned out... it almost looks like sculpted detail.

Volk Cutplague, Champion of Nurgle
Another of my favorite models! I think this is why I was drawn to collect Nurgle so long ago. There seemed to be an endless array of amazing miniatures. Slaanesh may be close second for me, but I was never taken with many of the Khorne or Tzeentch models (with a few exceptions as you will see when I get around the warbands).

Axegrim the Third, Champion of Nurgle
I keep saying this, but every time I paint a new model it seems to be true - this is one of my all-time favorites!
Why 'Axegrim the Third'? This the third time I've painted this model (and the third time I've bought it)... once for my original army, once for a Rogue Trader Realm of Chaos warband project (don't know what happened to that collection - I had beastmen with autoguns, some Necromunda Savvies, and a psyker converted from a genestealer hybrid in that group), and now.

Hack! Maim! Slay!
The personal standard of Wobblegnash.
I thought as the standard bearer, this model deserved extra attention so I painted a skull tattoo on his face and gave him spiffy stripped trousers.
Here's the unit so far...

All Hail Grandfather Nurgle!
I decided my units have grown large enough to need battle standard bearers. In the tradition of the old school armies, these things are freakin' huge!
In parting with tradition however, though these flags have hand designed elements, they are produced on the computer. The original design was one flown by my original army...
The original design was hand drawn, photocopied, and hand colored with colored pencils and citadel paints. For the new version, I hand drew the fly and scroll and scanned them into the computer. Then I imported the files into CorelDraw to block in the other elements and text. After I printed it, I used a rapidograph ink pen to stipple the dark area behind the Nurgle symbol and make the fly blend into the design before mounting it to the staff. I carefully glued the straps to the back flag, not the crossbar, so it will be easy to replace if I decide to change it later. I will be recreating the red banner above in a similar manner after I paint a few more beastmen.
Finally here is the Chaos Warrior unit so far... two more models and it's 'legal', but I'm aiming for a unit of twelve to get three ranks. I am really pleased with how the unit blends together despite the wide array of colors.

Uther Gutdoom
Another Warrior of Chaos... Uther Gutdoom, Champion of Nurgle.
The hand painted emblem on the shield is one I used on models in my original Chaos army. I basically painted the outlines first and then filled them in like a coloring book.

Maulblade the Doomkin
This model used to be my general back in the day (and probably will be again), so I was very excited when I spotted him on eBay - this model doesn't seem to be as common as some of the other champions so it was a real find.
Speaking of eBay, I think the Oldhammer community is a small one and it is likely that I am bidding on some of the same items as my readers. I apologize if I ninja'd something you had your eye on and apologize again in advance for future for grabbing more. I actually already have quite a large number of models, but I am trying to fill in some units and maybe add a few new ones...
I also have a notion to pick up enough other races to fill in the follower table from the Slaves of Darkness (i.e 8 Chaos Dwarves, 4 Harpies, 6 Orcs, 12 Wolves, etc). I think I am going to build warbands for each of the four Chaos Powers. My plan is for each power to have it's champion, 2d6 Beastmen or 2d6 Humans, plus the following...
Khorne - Chaos Warrior, 2d4 Chaos Dwarfs, and 1d4 Ogres
Slaanesh - Chaos Sorcerer, 1d6 Dark Elves and 1d4 Minotaurs
Nurgle - Chaos Warrior, 2d4 Skaven and 1 Troll
Tzeentch - Chaos Sorcerer, 1d4 Harpies and 1 Chimera (or similar winged beast)
In this case, the die result will be the number of models I've managed to acquire! The Beastmen and Humans (Thugs) will be fairly generic (unless sporting obvious power traits) so I can combine them into larger units for my army, while the other races will be more power specific. The champions will simply be designed to represent the models I've chosen.

Here are all of my Chaos Warriors to date...
The spear-armed guy may be promoted to champion status to lead my Chaos Thugs. I'm planning on one unit of twelve models for my army initially, but I actually want to collect enough models to build a unit of ten Chaos Warriors (these will be mostly the more Nurglely minis) and ten Chaos Marauders (the generic Chaos Warrior minis painted in neutral dark colors). I will probably build a ten model unit of Slaanesh Chaos Warriors as well as I already have four or five champions of that power.

M'Kai Burblerage
Ok, I'm having as much fun naming these models as painting them... maybe I WILL name the entire army!
The armor is my favorite green so far, most reminiscent of some of my favorite minis from The Lost and the Damned galleries... all GW paints...

1. Castellan Green (Base)
2. Athonian Camoshade (Shade)
3. Straken Green (Layer)
4. Nurgling Green (Layer)
5. Carroburg Crimson (Shade)... wound and damage areas only
I'm having a hard time deciding which model(s) will actually BE champions and which ones will fall into ranks for a unit of Chaos Warriors. Maybe I need to have them fight it out on the table! I just picked up a few more on eBay...

Daarkon Slobbergobble
Finally got around to taking some pics of stuff I've finished over the last few weeks... This range of Chaos Champions was released after Citadel stopped naming the models in their ads, so the name is one I came up with. I don't intend to name every model in my Chaos army, but I think it is appropriate for champions!
I normally paint 3-5 models at a time so it's been fun to just work on one and pay attention to details I might gloss over in production line painting. It will probably take a year to build an army this way, but I'm not in a huge rush with this project. I'm still adding models in one's and two's anyway. I'll probably break down and paint rank and file types in pairs, but I want to maintain a level of individuality in each model, so there's not a lot to gain in batch painting.
